Anna Coddington - Te Whakamiha (#41)

Anna Coddington - Te Whakamiha (#41)

We’re excited to introduce Anna Coddington’s latest album, Te Whakamiha, as this month’s Restless Soul record.

Te Whakamiha marks a significant milestone in Anna’s musical journey, as it’s her first album written predominantly in te reo Māori. Collaborating with her band, The Appreciations, Anna blends a vibrant mix of funk, neo-soul, R&B, and disco into a truly unique soundscape. The album’s title, Te Whakamiha, translates to “The Appreciations,” reflecting both her band’s name and a deep sense of gratitude for her dual paths in music and te reo Māori.

This eight-track album is a celebration of culture and sound, featuring catchy hooks and choruses that weave together te reo Māori and English. From the groove-driven vibes to the heartfelt lyrics, Te Whakamiha offers a fresh and memorable listening experience.

From Anna

Kia ora! My new album Te Whakamiha was made over a tumultuous year for me. We lost our house at the start of last year in the Auckland Anniversary weekend floods. From the beginning my the intention behind this album was purely to have fun- he mea whakapiki wairua. So recording it over last year was a real balm for me. Te Whakamiha means “The Appreciation”. It references my gratitude towards music as a healing force and also towards my band The Appreciations who are a joy to work with. We had so much fun making this album and hope you have some fun listening to it!
