Floating Points (Sam Shepherd) reshapes a pair of tracks from Caribou’s recent LP Suddenly on this new limited remix 12". The first entry from Shepherd here is a reworking of ‘Never Come Back’, one of Suddenly’s most beloved numbers. The original was already a dancefloor-ready delight, a buoyant and skippy house track replete with the sort of tender vocal loops from Caribou’s Dan Snaith which invoked his seminal ‘Can't Do Without You’. Shepherd chooses to embellish rather than overhaul ‘Never Come Back’ on his version - understandably perhaps, given the quality of the source material. Extending the tune to almost nine minutes in order to allow for extended mixing mid-set, ‘Never Come Back’ is gently coaxed into becoming one of the electrified house shuffles which Shepherd became known for in his early Floating Points days.

Something similar happens on Floating Points’ reworking of ‘Sister’, the ambient ballad with which Snaith began Suddenly. Again, Shepherd deploys gently insistent shuffle-house grooves, keening synth pads and chopped-up snippets of Snaith’s vocals to create another deft yet danceable number. The weightless beauty of Snaith’s original is also invoked in the way in which Floating Points bookends the ‘Sister’ remix with two passages of twinkling, meditative electronics.

Floating Points locks into his jazz-inflected shuffle-house mode once again on these two remixes of tracks from Caribou’s recent Suddenly LP.
